Friday Doughnuts: First week in the books
Plus, quotes from Tyler Herro's trainer, Dolphins picks and Dwyane Wade's wine.
Welcome to Friday Doughnuts! Back when I used to work in an office, someone would bring in doughnuts every Friday morning and we would stand around the water cooler in the break room and chat between bites of crullers and sips of coffee. Needless to say, we looked forward to it at the end of each week. So I’m going to try to recreate that energy here at The Wes Side. No, I can’t give you actual doughnuts, but every Friday morning I’ll deliver a batch of digital doughnuts (if you will) that are part observations, part notebook dump and part conversation starter. After consuming this assortment of cyber treats, I invite you to hang out and talk in the comments section. This is one of the main ways we will build our community. So here we go. Enjoy!
🍩 Well, the first week is in the books! A very successful launch. Thanks so much to everyone who has already subscribed, liked posts and shared with friends. ICYMI, we had an inside look at how the Heat’s front office responded to the first-round loss to the Bucks, a column following Pat Riley’s preseason press conference and observations from Miami’s opening night win over Milwaukee. Can’t wait to keep going and growing with you all.
🚾 Let me know what you liked, didn’t like, and want to see more of in the comments.
🍩 Notebook dump: Here’s a quote from skills trainer Drew Hanlen, who worked with Tyler Herro over the summer, that didn’t make Tuesday’s column. I asked him who Herro reminds him of. Hanlen emailed back, “We’ve looked a lot at two of my other clients: Bradley Beal & Zach LaVine. We also have watched players like Devin Booker, Steph Curry & Damian Lillard to add aspects of their game.”
🚾 Herro scored a game-high 27 points Thursday night. Do you think he’ll end up being Miami’s leading scorer this season?
🍩 Worth your time: For the San Francisco Chronicle, wine critic Esther Mobley spoke with Dwyane Wade about becoming the newest diversity recruiter for UC Davis’ wine program. Because of my previous life working in the wine industry in the Bay Area, I can assure you this is a big deal.
Bonus: Here’s Dwyane Wade reacting to being included in the NBA’s 75th Anniversary team.
🍩 Sunday pick: Maybe I’m hopelessly optimistic, but I think the Fins bounce back from a crushing loss with a win against the Atlanta Falcons. Dolphins are getting two points at home, but I’ll take the moneyline. All things considered, Tua looked OK in London and the Falcons are giving up the third-most yards and second-most points in the NFL. That was a bad job by Flores, but he’s not that bad of a coach. Fins get the win. Or not. Who knows.
🚾 Should the Dolphins trade for Deshaun Watson?
🍩 What I’m drinking: Helles Lager at Lincoln’s Beard Brewing Co. Light, easy drinking. Goes great with tacos and mediocre karaoke. Cheers!
