Friday Donuts 2/14: Happy Valentine's
“Valentine's Day was invented by Hallmark to sell cards.” - Ron Swanson, Parks & Rec
I’m sorry if you believe that. Mainly for two reasons: (1.) It’s not true, and (2.) So what if it is? You think Jesus envisioned us putting trees in our living room and getting drunk on mimosas at 10:15 a.m. to celebrate his birthday?
The point is, live a little. Have fun. Enjoy things. Every hopeless romantic I know is way more fun than the person who points out that tomatoes are a fruit and horoscopes aren’t real.
I can get down with a stoic, but hanging out with a nihilist blows.
Don’t have someone in your life? Love yourself. Love your mom. Love your dad. Love your friends. Tap into that eight-year-old you and ask someone to be your Valentine, even if just for the day. (But, y’know, don’t be creepy about it.)
Sure, Valentine’s Day is silly. I don’t need a day to make my person feel special.
Bleh. Get a life.
The point is that everybody else celebrates it and does a little something each year to acknowledge it. You buy your partner flowers and chocolates every day? Really? Of course not. Do it today. It doesn’t devalue the rest of the days, it just makes this one nice.
There’s a lot of shitty things going on. Valentine’s Day is not at or near the top of the list. If you’re gonna take a stand, do it for something that matters.
In the meantime, grab a bottle of wine, turn off the news and let that little romantic living somewhere inside you out for a bit. I promise, you can still complain about whatever you want tomorrow.
NBA Stuff
My piece on The Ringer this week: Can Pat Riley Build One Last Contender? The Godfather is facing arguably his greatest challenge yet. In the wake of the Jimmy Butler trade, and at 79 years old, can Riley construct one more title team in Miami and win a 10th ring?
On The Whiteboard, I wrote about who might join Kevin Durant in the 30k club next and did a little deep dive on my guy Trey Murphy III.
RealGM Radio: I was joined by Keith Smith to talk about the debuts of Luka Doncic, Jimmy Butler and De’Aaron Fox with their new teams, Kevin Durant’s future, and break down how the NBA trade deadline impacted the offseason.
